Mozambique Safari; Safari Holidays by Mozambique Odyssey

Safari in Mozambique is on the whole unchartered territory. With stiff competition form countries such as Tanzania and Botswana who are known for their exceptional National Parks and sheer volume of game, Mozambique has had a troubled time at establishing a quality safari circuit.

For many years, war ravaged the mainland of the country, spreading game throughout; locals were driven to such poverty that hunting was a mainstream means of survival and needless to say, game quickly disappeared. Gradually, since the end of the war game has returned yet it was only in 2003 that we, along with other tour operators, started sending clients to Mozambique for the sole purpose of safari.

The Niassa Reserve which lies on the Mozambique-Tanzania border, just south of the Rovuma river is where the countries highest concentration of game congregates. This is Mozambiques best park by far. However, considering the area saw botanists for the first time in 2003, little is still known about the plants in the area, let alone the real concentrations of game that are resident in the park. Recent aerial studies have shown that the Negomano area holds the highest concentration, specifically a large number of elephant and good herds of buffalo but be under no misconception, this is not big five country.

The truth about safari in Mozambique is that it is for the African connoisseur; for someone who has visited nearly every other park throughout the continent and now finds his challenge in seeking out areas where game resides completely undisturbed by tourism.

The fact is that with Tanzania and the lands of the Serengeti only one hours flight away and Botswana, home to the worlds most prolific big game only two hours away, Mozambiquan safari just does not compare. Logistically it is easy to link these countries together and quite frankly we are not going to tell you otherwise; Tanzania and Botswana are simply unbelievable game areas.
